Blue Hen women’s soccer edges James Madison, 1-0

9:50 a.m., Oct. 27, 2003--The University of Delaware women’s soccer team earned a tie and a victory in weekend Colonial Athletic Association play.

In a pair of games at the Delaware Mini-Stadium, the Fightin’ Blue Hens played to a 0-0 double overtime tie with George Mason University on Friday, then defeated James Madison University 1-0 on Sunday.

The Hens improved to 9-4-3 overall and 4-1-2 in the conference, where they stand in second place behind Hofstra University.

UD will return to action at 7 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 30, when the Hens travel to Richmond, Va., to face Virginia Commonwealth University.

The Hens will close the regular season on the road against the University of North Carolina Wilmington at 2 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 1.

The CAA tournament will open on Tuesday, Nov. 4.

In Sunday’s victory over James Madison, UD senior defender Ginna Lewing scored her first goal of the season and redshirt freshman Bonnie Mills picked up her second career shutout.

Lewing tallied the game-winner in the 41st minute of action when sophomore Mary Beth Creed struck a corner kick from the right side to the center of the box and Lewing headed the ball past Dukes goalkeeper Jessica Hussey.

Mills made four saves as she picked up her second shutout in just the third start of her career.

UD and George Mason played to a scoreless tie on Friday night. The Hens’ best scoring opportunity occurred in the middle of the first overtime when senior Caryn Blood blocked Patriot goalkeeper Sarah Coughlin's punt and just missed putting the ball into the net.

In goal for UD, sophomore Lindsay Shover made a save in each half to finish with her third shutout of the season and the ninth of her career.
