UD women’s soccer tops Towson on Pollaro goals

11:13 a.m., Oct. 20, 2003--University of Delaware women’s soccer team senior tri-captain Maria Pollaro scored two goals to lead the Fightin’ Blue Hens to a 2-1 victory over Colonial Athletic Association foe Towson University on Saturday afternoon.

With the win, UD improved to 7-4-2 overall and 3-1-1 in conference. The Hens are in second place in CAA behind Hofstra University, which is 11-1-2 overall and 4-0-1 in conference. Host Towson fell to 4-8-0 overall and 2-3-0 in conference.

UD came out with a quick score in the first half as Pollaro took a pass from sophomore defender Shelby Lawrence and beat the Towson goalkeeper at 8:35. The assist was the first of Lawrence's career at Delaware.

Pollaro scored her second goal of the game early in the second half when a scramble in front of the net resulted in a goal at 65:56.

Senior tri-captain Caryn Blood was credited with an assist on the play, giving her 10 assists on the season and 19 assists in her UD career. Before the contest, Blood ranked fifth in the nation with 0.75 assists per game.

Towson's Holly Noga scored the lone goal of the game for the Tigers less than eight minutes later but UD held on for the 2-1 final.

In goal, UD redshirt freshman Bonnie Mills registered her first start of the season.

UD will return to action at St. Francis College in Loretto, Pa., at 3 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 21.

The Hens will then return home for two weekend CAA games at the Delaware Mini-Stadium. UD will take on George Mason University at 7 p.m., Friday, Oct. 24, and James Madison University at 1 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 26.
