Blood's 20th career goal boosts UD women's soccer

11:15 a.m., Oct. 6, 2003--Caryn Blood scored the 20th goal of her career to lead the University of Delaware women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over host Old Dominion University on Sunday afternoon.

Blood scored unassisted at 56:17 and with the goal moved into fourth place all-time in career goals at Delaware. She has four goals and eight assists this season.

In goal, UD senior keeper Andrea Lunn made three saves en route to her first shutout of the season and the sixth of her career. It was the sixth consecutive game in which the Fightin’ Blue Hens allowed one goal or less.

With the victory, UD raised its record to 6-3-2 overall and 2-1-1 in the Colonial Athletic Association. Old Dominion fell to 1-5-3 overall and 0-3-1 in CAA.

On Friday night, Delaware played to a 1-1 double overtime tie against the College of William & Mary in Williamsburg, Va.

William & Mary got on the board first at 67:17 as Lindsay Vanderspiegel scored off an assist from Ali West.

Delaware retaliated a little over eight minutes later as junior Ginette Buffone tied the score at 1-1 off an assist from Blood at 75:59.

The game remained scoreless for the final 14 minutes of regulation and the two subsequent overtime periods.

In goal, sophomore Lindsay Shover made six saves.

With the tie, William & Mary is 5-4-2, 1-1-1 in CAA.

Delaware will return to action on Friday, Oct. 10, as the Hens travel to Annapolis for a non-conference match against the U.S. Naval Academy. Game time is 7 p.m.
