Buffone, Pollaro goals lift UD women’s soccer

Senior tri-captain Maria Pollaro scored a goal for the Blue Hens

10:08 a.m., Sept. 15, 2003--The University of Delaware scored two first-half goals in a 2-1 victory over Boston University in the second game of the George Mason/Kappa Invitational on Sunday afternoon in Fairfax, Va.

UD lost the opener 3-1 to North Carolina State University on Friday.

The Fightin’ Blue Hens return to action against Howard University at 7 p.m., Friday, Sept. 19, at the Delaware Mini-Stadium.

On Sunday, Boston University jumped to an early lead when Brooke Bingham capitalized on a penalty kick in the second minute of action.

Delaware (3-2-1) responded when junior Ginette Buffone scored her first goal of the season and the second of her career to tie the match, 1-1, off an assist from senior tri-captain Caryn Blood at 15:46.

Less than six minutes later, UD senior tri-captain Maria Pollaro hit the back of the net from 12 yards out for the game-winner at 21:08 with assists by junior Christine Wrightson and Blood.

In goal for the Blue Hens, sophomore Lindsay Shover made seven saves.

In the loss to North Carolina State, Wrightson scored the only UD goal on an assist by Blood.
