UD women’s lacrosse team is defeated by Rutgers

10:31 a.m., March 8, 2004--The University of Delaware women’s lacrosse team fell 12-8 to Rutgers University in a game played Saturday afternoon at Rullo Stadium.

The Fightin’ Blue Hens jumped out to a 4-1 lead and held a 5-4 advantage at halftime but Rutgers scored five straight goals to open the second half and went on the win.

UD fell to 1-2 on the season. The Hens will attempt to even their record when they visit Loyola College in Baltimore for a game at 4 p.m., Friday, March 12.

Against Rutgers, Kristin Cellucci had two goals and one assist. UD freshman Jenny Diana had two goals, and Becky Zane and Katie Muth both had a goal and an assist.

Rutgers improved to 2-1 on the season as Katie Batiuk had three goals and two assists, Lindsay Rising had three goals and Emily Widrick and Anne Marchitello had two goals each. Goalkeeper Lyndsey Feldman recorded 19 saves.

UD took a 4-1 lead midway through the opening half.

After Batiuk started the scoring for Rutgers just 1:22 into the game, the Hens responded with two goals from Cellucci and one each from Shannon Kron and Muth for the 4-1 lead.

Diana scored her first goal of the game with 1:39 left in the opening half to send the Hens into halftime holding a 5-4 advantage.

Rutgers came out strong to start the second half, scoring four goals in the first five minutes and adding a fifth unanswered goal with 16:45 remaining to take control at 9-5.

The Hens, who had been held scoreless for 16 minutes, got on the board again with 16:21 left to play when Zane scored. Erin Edell followed with another goal just 12 seconds later to pull the Hens to within 9-7.

Rutgers answered with two straight goals of its own to extend the lead 11-7.

Diana's second goal with 12:17 remaining cut the lead to 11-8.
