Blue Hens baseball team wins again in CAA tourney

11:37 p.m., May 27, 2004--The University of Delaware baseball team overcame a rocky start to defeat the College of William and Mary 7-3 and remain unbeaten in the Colonial Athletic Association’s double-elimination championship tournament.

The Fightin’ Blue Hens will return to action at 3:30 p.m., Friday, at Brooks Field on the campus of the University of North Carolina Wilmington, facing the winner of tonight’s game between host UNC Wilmington and Old Dominion.

In Thursday’s victory, the Hens fell behind 3-0 after three innings, but starting pitcher Jarame Beaupre settled down and the offense came to life.

UD scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth, with shortstop Todd Davison and first baseman Steve Van Note hitting back-to-back singles and both scoring on a third single by right fielder Dave Harden.

Harden later scored on a double by All-CAA catcher Brian Valichka.

The Hens scored three more to take the lead in the bottom of the sixth. Valichka got things going with a single and eventually scored on a throwing error. The big hit was a two-run single by Davison that scored Brock Donovan and Brent Rogers.

UD finished the scoring in the bottom of the seventh when a single by Hagerich scored pinch runner Dan Kozek, who came on for Kelly Buber.

Beaupre pitched his second complete game of the season, striking out five William and Mary batters.
