Cardiac surgeon talks about women and heart disease May 12

2:26 p.m., April 16, 2004--It's not just a killer of men. Heart disease is the leading cause of death among both men and women. While many women fear breast cancer, a woman's chance of dying from breast cancer is one in 15, compared to the one in two chance of dying from cardiovascular disease.

The good news is that many heart disease risk factors, such as smoking, physical inactivity, stress and high cholesterol, can be controlled—reducing a woman's risk.

On Wednesday, May 12, Kathleen McNicholas, a cardiac surgeon and heart patient, will be on campus to talk to employees about women and heart disease.

Her presentation, "A Heart to Heart Talk About the Female Heart," will be held from 12:05-12:55 p.m. in room 125 of Alfred Lerner Hall. McNicholas will discuss how women often experience symptoms different from men and what can be done to lower risk.

The cost for the program is 10 Wellness dollars. To register, go to [www.udel.edu/wellness], or call 831-8388.
