UD women’s basketball defeats Loyola College

UD freshman guard Tyresa Smith had 10 points in the victory over Loyola.
1:57 p.m., Dec. 15, 2003--The University of Delaware women's basketball team held Loyola College to just seven points in the first half en route to a 54-25 victory on Sunday afternoon at Reitz Arena in Baltimore.

The Fightin’ Blue Hens earned their seventh straight victory and improved to 7-1 on the season, continuing the best start in UD history.

The 25 points were the fewest allowed by the Hens since an 86-25 victory over Loyola in 1987. The seven points tied Loyola's school record for fewest points in a half.

UD junior forward Tiffany Young scored a game-high 12 points, and freshman guard Tyresa Smith matched a career-high with 10 points. Young and Smith also had seven rebounds apiece.

UD freshman guard Liz Hayes added eight points and was a perfect 6-6 from the foul line.

The Hens held the Greyhounds scoreless for the first four minutes of the game before Loyola senior guard Lindsay Cobb nailed a three pointer at 16:11 to make the score 6-3.

The Hens then limited Loyola to just two field goals in the final 16 minutes of the first half during a 20-4 run that resulted in a 26-7 lead.

UD will return to action at 7 p.m., Monday, Dec. 22, when the Hens host Manhattan College at the Bob Carpenter Sports/Convocation Center.

After the game against Manhattan, UD will begin Colonial Athletic Association play, traveling to the University of North Carolina Wilmington on Jan. 4 and the College of William & Mary on Jan. 9.
