UD women’s basketball tops SJU, continues streak

Freshman Liz Hayes scored a career-high 17 points against St. John’s.
9:40 a.m., Dec. 9, 2003--The University of Delaware women’s basketball game won its sixth straight game Monday night, defeating St. John’s University 59-44 at Alumni Hall in Jamaica, N.Y.

UD freshman guard Liz Hayes scored a career-high 17 points, and junior forward Tiara Malcom scored 14 points and had nine rebounds as the Fightin’ Blue Hens improved to 6-1, the best start in school history.

Hayes scored 13 of her points in the first half as UD held St. John’s to just 15 points at the break, the lowest total since the Hens limited Centenary to 14 points at the Cornell University Classic Tournament in 2001.

"I thought our kids were up to the challenge tonight. They put forth a great defensive effort,” UD Head Coach Tina Martin said. "We wanted to get the ball inside to our big kids, which helped create some open jumpers for the girls on the perimeter. This was a key road win."

UD senior Tracey Howell finished with eight points and eight rebounds, and junior Julie Sailer had eight points, six rebounds and three steals.

St. John’s (3-3) was led by Angie Clark, a three-time Big East Conference Freshman of the Week selection this season, and Kim MacMillan, who scored 15 points each. Secret Stubblefield, who was averaging 21.4 points per game for the Red Storm, was held scoreless on 0-11 shooting from the field in 34 minutes of action.

UD got a strong start in the game, building a 19-7 lead keyed by Hayes and Sailer. The Hens increased their lead to 29-11 on a 10-1 run featuring baskets by five different players and closed the half leading 37-15.

UD opened the second half on an 8-2 run to open up a 45-17 lead, scoring on two baskets by junior Tiffany Young and one each by Malcom and Howell.

The Hens controlled the game the rest of the way, maintaining a double-digit lead throughout the half despite a 16-4 St. John's run to close the game.

UD will return to action at 2 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 14, when the Hens travel to Loyola College of Maryland for a game at Reitz Arena. Loyola is led by Lauren Troupe, a 6-foot sophomore forward who is averaging 12.8 points and 5.8 rebounds per game, and Katie Scherle, a 6-2 sophomore center who is averaging 10.2 points and 8.6 rebounds.

After playing at Loyola, UD will return home to face Manhattan College at 7 p.m., Monday, Dec. 22, at the Bob Carpenter Sports/Convocation Center.

The Hens will be off through the holiday break and will return to action Jan. 4, traveling to take on Colonial Athletic Association rival the University of North Carolina Wilmington. UD will play at the College of William & Mary on Jan. 9, then will return home to host national power Old Dominion University at 7 p.m., Sunday, Jan. 11.
