UD women’s basketball battles St. John’s tonight

Tiara Malcom had 19 points in the UD victory over Navy.
10:41 a.m., Dec. 8, 2003--The University of Delaware women’s basketball team will travel to New York City for a game against St. John’s University of the Big East Conference at 7 p.m. tonight.

This will be the second meeting ever for the teams, the Fightin’ Blue Hens having won 63-47 last season at the Bob Carpenter Sports/Convocation Center.

UD enters the game 5-1 after a 69-57 home victory over the U.S. Naval Academy on Friday night. The Hens have a five-game winning streak and have matched the best six-game start in school history.

Junior forward Tiara Malcom netted a game-high 19 points and pulled down eight rebounds, and senior forward Tiffany Young added 13 points and seven rebounds to lead the Hens.

UD jumped out to a 15-2 lead in the first nine minutes of play and never looked back.

Julie Sailer and Tyresa Smith each added nine points for the Blue Hens while Tracey Howell grabbed a team-high nine rebounds.

The game looked like a runaway early as UD built a 21-4 lead with 7:16 left to play. But Navy rallied with a 13-2 run as Abi Campbell and Courtney Davidson combined for nine points, pulling to within 26-20 with 52 seconds left in the half. A lay-up by Kate Hobbs just before the buzzer cut the lead to 28-22 at halftime.

UD took control midway through the second half to pull away. Navy cut the lead to five points at 29-24 on a lay-up by Adrienne Maeser and were down just six at 33-27 when Davidson hit a three-pointer with 15:15 remaining.

But Liz Hayes followed with a three-pointer, Malcom converted two free throws, Smith added a free throw, and Young sank a lay-up to extend the lead to 14 points at 41-27.

Navy never got closer than 12 points the rest of the way. The Hens enjoyed their biggest lead at 56-34 with 8:04 left to play.
