Blue Hen women’s basketball to tip off against Richmond

2:36 p.m., Nov. 18, 2003--The University of Delaware women’s basketball team will open the 2003-04 season with a game against the University of Richmond at 7 p.m., Friday, Nov. 21, at the Bob Carpenter Sports/Convocation Center.

Head Coach Tina Martin’s Fightin’ Blue Hens are coming off their fourth consecutive 20-win season, one in which they shared the Colonial Athletic Association regular season title with perennial power Old Dominion University. UD lost to Old Dominion in the CAA tournament championship game.

UD, which finished 22-9, earned a berth in the Women’s National Invitation Tournament. It was the Hens’ third consecutive postseason appearance.

UD returns two starters in juniors Julie Sailer, a 5-foot 11-inch guard and forward who averaged 10.8 points per game last season, and Tiara Malcom, a 6-1 forward who averaged 13.1 points and 7.6 rebounds.

The Hens get some needed size with the addition of 6-4 sophomore Arek Deng, a transfer from the University of Maryland, and 6-3 junior Kristy Gaines, a transfer from Hagerstown Community College.

Stepping in at guard to replace graduates Allison Trapp and Carrie Timmins, now a UD assistant coach, are a trio of freshmen, 5-8 Alena Koshansky from Fairfax, Va., 5-7 Liz Hayes from Easton, Pa., and 5-10 Tyresa Smith from Dover.

Richmond is a member of the Atlantic 10 Conference and in a preseason poll was picked to finish second in the conference’s western division. Senior Amber Goppert , junior Kate Flavin and freshman Christina Campion were named to preseason All-Conference teams.

Flavin was Richmond’s leading scorer and rebounder in 2002-03, finishing among the nation’s top players in rebounding. Goppert is a strong defender and Campion a two-time New Jersey prep player of the year.
