UD womens basketball team signs three players 3 p.m., May 3, 2004--Three outstanding high school players have signed NCAA national letters of intent to compete for the University of Delaware womens basketball team, Head Coach Tina Martin announced Monday. Joining the Fightin Blue Hens are 5-foot, 9-inch guard Melissa Czorniewy from Bergenfield, N.J., 6-foot guard Katie Kline from Pennsville, N.J., and 6-foot, 1-inch forward Courtney Irving from Hockessin. All three were named to the Street & Smith's Magazine pre-season honorable mention All-American team. I am extremely excited about this group of incoming freshmen, Martin said. Each one has the ability to make an immediate impact on our program." Czorniewy, a first team All-Bergen County selection in 2004, averaged more than 19 points and 10 rebounds per game during her senior season at the Academy of Holy Angels. She was named first team All-North Jersey in 2003 and 2004 and was a third team All-State selection as a junior, leading her team to the Bergen County title. Czorniewy also lettered in cross-country at Holy Angels. Melissa will give us another viable option at the guard position next year, Martin said. She is a complete player who will be a scoring threat to our opponents because she can hit long-range shots and also drive to the basket. Kline comes to the Hens after an outstanding career at Pennsville High School, where she had 2,112 points and more than 1,000 rebounds and set new Tri-County and Salem County career scoring records. A Tri-County Conference All-Star, Kline averaged more than 25 points per game in her senior season. Kline's father, Steve, is the boy's basketball coach at Penns Grove High School. Katie has more size and is more physical then some of our guards, Irving was a first team All-Blue Hen Conference Flight B selection in 2004, when she averaged 24.5 points and 13.1 rebounds per game to lead the Charter School of Wilmington to the state semifinals. She also was named second team All-State. Courtney is a solid, capable post player, Martin said. She can play with her back to the basket but she can also hit jump shots. She will be a viable scoring and rebounding option for us next year. UD completed the 2003-04 season with a record of 19-10 overall and 10-8 in the Colonial Athletic Association. The Hens reached the CAA tournament semifinals where they fell 73-62 to eventual champion Old Dominion University.
