UD women’s basketball defeats Towson 69-56

10:47 a.m., March 1, 2004--The University of Delaware women’s basketball team continued a strong late season run with a 69-56 victory at Towson University in Colonial Athletic Association action Sunday afternoon.

With the victory, the Fightin’ Blue Hens improved to 17-9 overall and 9-8 in the CAA and won for the fifth time in the last six games.

The Hens will close the regular season with a game against George Mason University at 7 p.m., Thursday, March 4, at the Bob Carpenter Sports/Convocation Center. George Mason, which is 16-8 overall, is tied with Hofstra for second place in the conference with a record of 11-6.

Old Dominion is in first at 16-1, and UD is in a three-way tie for third with the University of North Carolina Wilmington and Virginia Commonwealth.

The CAA tournament will be played March 10-13 at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Va.

In Sunday’s victory, junior forward Tiara Malcom and freshman guard Alena Koshansky led the Hens with 19 points each. Freshman guard Tyresa Smith added 14 points for UD.

Malcom scored in double figures for the 15th straight game despite being limited to 27 minutes with an ankle injury. Koshansky hit five three-point baskets, one shy of the UD record, on the way to her career-high point total.

UD had 20 steals in the game, six by Amanda Blackstone and five each by Smith and Koshansky.

Towson, which fell to 9-17 overall and 1-15 in the CAA, had just eight players available. Leading scorer Kacy O'Brien sat out with a knee injury.

Center Kelly Robinson led Towson with 18 points and 10 rebounds before fouling out and Brandi Harris added 16 points and six assists.

UD jumped out to a 27-21 lead at the half thanks to the play of Koshansky, who scored 11 points in the first half.

UD opened the second half with a 7-2 run to take a 34-23 advantage but Towson stormed back to tie the score at 38-38 with 13:38 remaining.

The Hens responded, taking off on a pivotal 15-1 run that put the game away. UD held Towson without a field goal for more than four minutes. Malcom led the run with eight points and Koshansky hit a three-pointer.

After the run, Towson never got closer than 11 points the rest of the way.
