JMU beats buzzer, tops UD in women’s basketball

Tiara Malcom scored 15 points in UD’s loss to James Madison.
12:16 p.m., Feb. 13, 2004--Scoring just before the final buzzer, James Madison University defeated the University of Delaware 62-61 in Colonial Athletic Association women’s basketball action Thursday night at the Bob Carpenter Sports/Convocation Center.

The loss was the fourth straight for the Fightin’ Blue Hens, who fell to 13-8 overall and 5-7 in the conference.

UD will play the next two conference games on the road, traveling to Hofstra University for a game at 2 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 15, and to Old Dominion University for a game at 7 p.m., Friday, Feb. 20. The Hens will return home to face the University of North Carolina Wilmington at 1 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 22.

James Madison, which snapped a two-game losing streak to improve to 9-14 overall and 4-8 in the CAA, rallied from a six-point deficit with just under two minutes left to play.

Lesley Dickinson scored 19 points and pulled down eight rebounds for James Madison. Meredith Alexis scored 14 points, Jody LeRose scored 13 points and freshman Shirley McCall scored the winning basket, which came as time expired.

Tiara Malcom scored 15 points to lead UD. Tiffany Young added 12 points and seven rebounds and Tyresa Smith scored 10 points.

UD, which has lost four straight for the first time since February 1998, is 0-7 this season when opponents score more than 60 points.

James Madison led 30-26 at halftime and took its biggest lead 26 seconds into the second half on a three-pointer by Dickinson to go up 33-26. But UD, which converted four three-point plays in the second stanza, chipped away at the lead and finally tied the game at 36-36 with 15:12 remaining.

The half featured six more ties before the Hens broke a 50-50 deadlock on a jumper by Smith with 6:09 remaining. UD built the lead to as many as seven points and still led by six points at 60-54 when Young connected on a jumper with 1:51 remaining.

But, James Madison rallied as Dickinson nailed a three-pointer to cut the lead to 60-57 and LeRose hit another three less than a minute later to knot the score at 60-60 with 41 seconds left.

UD freshman guard Liz Hayes missed the first of two foul shots with 26 seconds left, one of four missed free throws in the final 2:31 by the Hens, but hit the second to give the Hens a 61-60 lead.

James Madison got possession but LeRose's three-pointer with eight seconds left was blocked out of bounds by the Hens’ Amanda Blackstone. Dickinson then took the inbounds pass and her jumper from the foul line was off the mark but McCall was there to gather in the rebound and score just before the buzzer.
