Blue Hens defeat Towson in CAA women’s basketball

UD freshman guard Liz Hayes scored 15 points in Thursday’s victory over Towson.
9:05 a.m., Jan. 30, 2004--After defeating Towson University 65-52 on Thursday night at the Bob Carpenter Sports/Convocation Center, the University of Delaware women’s basketball team will hit the road.

The Fightin’ Blue Hens, who improved to 13-4 overall and 5-3 in the Colonial Athletic Association with the win over Towson, will play at James Madison University on Sunday, Feb. 1, and at Virginia Commonwealth University on Thursday, Feb. 5.

UD will return home for a conference game against the College of William & Mary on Sunday, Feb. 8. Tip-off will be at 3 p.m.

In Thursday’s victory, the Hens broke open a close game early in the second half.

Junior forward Tiffany Young and freshman guard Liz Hayes scored 15 points each and junior forward Tiara Malcom, the reigning CAA Player of the Week, had 11 points, 11 rebounds and five blocked shots. Junior guard Julie Sailer also added 11 points.

Towson guard Kacy O'Brien had a big game, with 24 points and eight rebounds, and center Kelly Robinson scored 13 points.

"I knew this would be a tough game," UD Head Coach Tina Martin said. “They will be a good team in the CAA. I told our team that I wore my boots tonight to climb the mountain. We struggled at times but we did a better job in the second half. We want to stay towards the top of the league standings. We have nine more games and a lot can happen."

The Hens continue to win with a strong defense and are 13-0 when they hold opponents to fewer than 70 points. UD is ranked 12th in NCAA Division I in scoring defense, allowing just 54.6 points per game.

UD took a slim 30-28 halftime lead after a sluggish first half that featured five ties. Towson led most of the final six minutes before Hayes connected on a three-pointer with 59 seconds left and fed Malcom for a basket just before the halftime buzzer to put the Hens up by a basket.

UD put the game away with a strong start in the second half, taking advantage of six Towson turnovers in the first six minutes.

Leading 34-33 just over two minutes into the half, the Hens took off on a decisive 14-0 run after which they led by double digits the rest of the game.

The win enabled UD to maintain contact with CAA leaders Old Dominion and Hofstra, which are both 7-1. UD is tied for second with George Mason, both at 5-3, followed by the University of North Carolina Wilmington and Drexel, both 4-4.
