UD women’s basketball prepares to face Hofstra
Hofstra is 6-6 overall and 3-0 in CAA, with victories over Virginia Commonwealth, the College of William & Mary and the University of North Carolina Wilmington. Hofstra is led by junior forward Amaka Agugua, who is averaging 13 points and 7.2 rebounds per game, and senior guard Staceyann Claxton, who is averaging 8.5 points and 3.3 assists per game. Claxton is the sister of former Hofstra star Speedy Claxton, who went on to play in the NBA. UD is coming off a 67-56 loss Sunday to perennial power Old Dominion University, which built a large lead early against the young Fightin’ Blue Hens. Old Dominion, the 12-time defending CAA champion, jumped out to a 15-2 lead in the opening 10 minutes and held off the Hens the rest of the way. The Monarchs avenged a 58-50 setback to UD last Feb. 14 at the Bob Carpenter Center. Old Dominion guard Max Nhassengo led four scorers in double figures with a game-high 20 points to go with six steals. Myriah Spence scored 13 points, including three three-pointers, Lawona Davis added 11 points and five assists and Monique Coker chipped in with 10 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. UD, coming off a 68-56 loss at the College of William & Mary on Friday night, fell to 9-3 overall and 1-2 in CAA. Guard Julie Sailer led the Hens with 16 points, while Tiara Malcom added 12 points and seven rebounds. Tyresa Smith came off the bench to score12 points and Tiffany Young had 11 points and eight rebounds. UD, which tied Old Dominion for the CAA regular season title a year ago, has lost consecutive conference games for the first time since the 2001-02 season. "We weren't ready in the first half for the press," UD Head Coach Tina Martin said. "Then we came out in the second half and attacked, but we need to do that from the start.
