UD tops fund-raising mark in American Heart Walk

9:45 a.m., Nov. 4, 2003--The University of Delaware raised a record-setting $13,709 during the American Heart Walk at the Riverfront Walkway in Wilmington in September.

Thanks to the more than 120 participants and Heart Walk captains, UD, which has been a consistent top 10 performer, placed ninth among the 50 Delaware company sponsors that participated in the event.

“This is an increase from last year’s figure of $12,736,” Marianne Carter, UD Wellness Center director and team captain, said. “Considering the economy, this is fantastic.”

Among the team captains responsible for registering team members were Courtenay Cotton, EG ’05; Phillip Wescott, an instructor in communication; Mayra Focht, library assistant in Morris Library; Maria Pullella, CHEP ’05; Randee Tobin, secretary, dean’s office, health and nursing science; Linda Smith, a program coordinator in the Employee Wellness Center; and Richie Holland, manager of human resources.

Other team captains who recruited walkers include Michelle Koslow, CHEP ’05; Patricia Dunham, library analyst, Morris Library; Teresa Baker, secretary, Education Research and Development Center; Susan Katz, staff assistant, University Honors Program; Darlene Cartwright, events coordinator, student centers; Sharon Turner, administrative assistant, Office of the Executive Vice President; and Loren Holland, AS ’05.

UD members of the American Heart Association 500 club—those who raised $500 or more as an individual—include Carter, Holland, Tobin and Ed Broadhurst. Top individual honors went to Carter, who raised $1,260.

YoUDee T-shirts, designed by Barbara Stein in the Office of Public Relations, were given to each UD walker and prizes also were given to walkers who raised $100 or more.

“I was so pleased to see so many UD students and staff show up to support this event,” Carter said. “Between our large group, YoUDee, the cheerleaders and dance team, it was very obvious that UD was a major participant in this worthwhile community event.”
