Campus voter registration drive set Nov. 4-6

10:31 a.m., Oct. 30, 2003--In an effort to encourage more youth to vote in the 2004 elections, UD’s Urban Affairs Student Association is hosting a voter registration drive on campus Tuesday-Thursday, Nov. 4-6.

Certified registrars will be available in the Trabant University Center and in the Perkins Student Center from 10 a.m.-3 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 5, and also in Russell and Rodney dining halls from 4-7 p.m., on Tuesday, Nov. 4, and again Thursday, Nov. 6.

“The goal is to get more young people involved in the democratic process,” Tom DeWire, CHEP M ’04, a member of the Urban Affairs Student Association, said. According to a Harvard study, “Campus Kids, the New Swing Voter,” only 32 percent of registered voters ages 18-24 went to the polls in the 2000 election, an extremely close presidential contest.

In Delaware, as in most states, voters cannot register at the polls on election day. DeWire said that registration applications for Delaware and all other states will be available during the campus voter registration drive, as will information about absentee voting.

For more information, or to obtain a voter registration form, call DeWire at 540-4596 or e-mail him at [thdewire@udel.edu].
