Visiting scholar addresses infant mortality issues March 8-16

4:44 p.m., Feb. 26, 2004--Torstein Vik, an eminent physician and scholar from Norway, will examine infant mortality and prenatal care in a series of lectures scheduled to take place from Monday, March 8, through Tuesday, March 16.

The weeklong program brings medical scholars and experts together to examine the global impact of pressing health issues. Infant mortality rate is considered by many authorities to be the most significant indicator of a nation’s overall health.

Norway has been identified as a global leader in infant mortality research, and Vik is internationally recognized as an expert in maternal-child health outcomes. A medical doctor and a vice dean for the medical faculty at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, Vik focuses on the worldwide epidemic of prematurity and its associated ethical issues.

Vik’s schedule of campus talks and related events includes:

International health promotion, 4-5 p.m., Monday, March 8, President’s Room, Blue & Gold Club;

Health fair, 12:30-1 p.m., Tuesday, March 9, Perkins Student Center; and

Informal conversation with Vik, 2-4 p.m., Tuesday, March 9, 202 Alison Hall.

This International Visiting Scholar program is sponsored by UD’s Center for International Studies; the College of Health and Nursing Sciences; the departments of Health, Nutrition and Exercise Sciences, Nursing and Individual and Family Studies; and Christiana Care Health System; Bayhealth; and the Delaware Division of Public Health.
