Three volleyball players sign with Delaware

10:27 a.m., Dec. 10, 2003--Three volleyball players have signed National Letters of Intent to compete for the University of Delaware, it was announced Monday by Fightin’ Blue Hens Head Coach Bonnie Kenny.

The players are Colleen Walsh of Cleveland, Allison Lutz of Burnsville, Minn., and Megan Welch of Yorba Linda, Calif.

Walsh, a 6-foot outside/middle hitter, earned District Most Valuable Player and All-District honors this season as she led Regina High School to a 21-4 record, the best mark in school history and a berth in the district playoffs.

She is currently ranked No. 1 in her class academically and is also president of the Student Council. A High School Heisman Award nominee, she will play for the Cleveland Volleyball Company this off-season.

Walsh plans to major in business at UD.

"Colleen is a versatile student-athlete that will contribute in a variety of ways," Kenny said. "She has an excellent work ethic and wants to be a successful Division I volleyball player. She is a very determined student-athlete and a solid leader who we expect to make an impact next season."

Lutz, a 5-foot 9-inch setter, earned All-Conference and second-team All-Metro honors this past season and leaves Burnsville High School as the all-time assist leader with 2,526.

An all-state honorable mention selection, Lutz is a volunteer peer tutor and was selected as a High School Youth Service Leadership participant. She currently ranks in the top 3 percent of her class academically and plans to double-major in elementary education and psychology.

Lutz was named a Junior All-American at a national tournament in Athens, Ga., in July and will compete with the Northern Lights 18-1 club team this off-season.

"Allison is a very experienced setter who brings a lot to our program," Kenny said. "She plays for an excellent club team and was a leader at Burnsville since she was a freshman. She's a feisty competitor and a hard worker who will bring a lot of energy and determination to our squad. She is used to winning and will bring that mentality to Delaware."

Welch, a 5-9 setter, was a first-team All-Sunset League selection this fall as she helped lead Esperanza High School to titles at the Dave Mohs Tournament, where she was named to the All-Tournament team and won Best Defensive Player honors, as well as the Capo Valley Tournament.

This fall, she was a recipient of the Aztec Award, which is given to the most valuable player of the Esperanza High volleyball team. Esperanza High won the California Interscholastic Federation Southern Section 1AA championship this season.

A member of the National Honor Society, Welch is a California Scholarship Federation winner who ranks in the top 25 percent of her academic class. She will play with the Impact Volleyball club team this off-season.

Welch plans to major in hotel, restaurant and institutional management at UD.

Welch joins former Esperanza High standout and current UD outside hitter/setter Sarah Engle as a Fightin’ Blue Hen.

"Megan has been playing volleyball on a competitive level for a very long time, so she brings a wealth of experience with her," Kenny said. "We are excited she will be joining us next fall."

UD finished the 2003 season with an 11-17 mark, including a 5-9 record in Colonial Athletic Association play.
