Delaware volleyball team wins two weekend matches

11:23 a.m., Oct. 13, 2003--The University of Delaware volleyball team won two Colonial Athletic Association weekend matches, defeating Virginia Commonwealth University and James Madison University.

The Fightin’ Blue Hens evened their overall record at 9-9 and raised their CAA record to 3-2 with the victories, both by 3-0 scores and both at Viera Court in the Carpenter Sports Building.

Next weekend, UD will take to the road for CAA matches at George Mason University on Friday, Oct. 17, and at Towson University on Saturday, Oct. 18.

In Friday’s victory over Virginia Commonwealth, UD junior Valerie Murphy led three players in double digit kills. She had 14, sophomore Niecy Taylor had 13 and sophomore Jennifer Daniels had 12.

The Hens had eight service aces to six for Virginia Commonwealth, and also recorded 53 assists.

In Saturday’s victory over James Madison, Murphy had 16 kills, Taylor had 14 and junior Sarah Engle had 10.

Senior Allison Hunter had 51 assists and nine digs for UD, and junior Taylor Govaars had 10 digs.

The victory was UD’s third straight, all by 3-0 scores. The last time a Delaware team accomplished that feat was in 1997 when the Hens shut out Fairleigh Dickinson, Navy and Morgan State.
