8:20 p.m., Nov. 29, 2003--The University of Delaware football team played a near perfect first quarter, taking advantage of three turnovers to score 27 points, and went on to defeat Southern Illinois University 48-7 in the first round of the NCAA Division I-AA playoffs on a cold and windy Saturday afternoon at Delaware Stadium. The Fightin Blue Hens improved to 12-1 and will take on the winner of the Northern Iowa-Montana State game, which is being played Saturday evening. The Hens will host that game on Saturday, Dec. 6, and tickets go on sale Monday morning. UD running back Germaine Bennett rushed for 104 yards and two touchdowns on 15 carries, and teammate Antawn Jenkins rushed for 99 yards and one touchdown on 24 carries.
Hen quarterback Andy Hall threw 10 completions in 18 attempts for 101 yards and two touchdowns. Backup quarterback Ryan Carty also threw for a touchdown. Catching touchdown passes were wide receivers David Boler, Justin Long and Joe Bleymaier. More than 14,000 attended the game. Article by Neil Thomas To learn how to subscribe to UDaily, click here. |
