Trash disposal guidelines for Newark renters

1:57 p.m., May 20, 2004--College students and other renters should be aware of Newark trash regulations and should make arrangements for pickup when they move. Those who fail to do so face fines.

The guidelines for a single-family residence or half a duplex are:

  • Three bulk items may be scheduled for pickup at no cost by calling the Public Works Department at 366-7045. The scheduled pickups are on a limited, first-come, first-served basis, and items should be placed at the curb no earlier than 6 p.m. the day before pickup. For more than three items or for unscheduled pickups, a fee will be charged.
  • Excess trash—defined by Newark law as a pile of trash larger than 3-by-3-by-4 feet, four 32-gallon containers or trash that takes more than two minutes of collection time for one person—will be collected on a fee basis.

Owners and managers of rental units have been notified of the collection criteria, and invoices will be sent to them in time for them to deduct fees from rental deposits.

For more information about collections on a free or fee basis, call the Public Works Department at 366-7045.
