Hens Smith, Riley run well at New York track meet

Tyechia Smith set a new UD record in the 400-meter run.
11:39 a.m., Feb. 16, 2004--University of Delaware junior Tyechia Smith and senior Patrick Riley had strong performances at the fourth annual New Balance Armory Collegiate Invitational, held Friday and Saturday at the Armory Track and Field Center in New York.

Smith broke her own school record to finish seventh in the 400-meter run and ran a leg for the sixth place 1,600-meter relay team, and Riley finished fifth in the 5,000-meter run.

The meet included some of the top NCAA Division I teams in the East. The UD men’s and women’s teams both posted eight top 20 finishes, with the Fightin’ Blue Hen men 26th overall and the women 23rd overall in the team standings.

Riley was the UD men's top finisher as he placed fifth in the 5,000 meters with a time of 14:48.98, less than a second off his personal best and just over 10 seconds behind the winning time of 14:38.35 run by Tom Witzleben of La Salle.

Also for the UD men, senior Jerome Holder was ninth in the 60 meter hurdles (8.45), sophomore Roger Brown was 12th in the 200 meters (22.32) and 13th in the 60 meters (7.01), junior Sidney Haugabrook was 13th in the 200 meters (22.33) and 25th in the 60 meters (7.13), and freshman Rashaad Woodard was 20th place in the 200 meters (22.48) and 37th in the 60 meters (7.32).

UD’s distance medley relay team placed 10th with a time of 10:22.90, and the 1,600-meter relay team was 11th with a time of 3:19.83.

The UD women's 1,600-meter relay team of Smith, sophomore Kristen Frustillo, freshman Brittany Wright and freshman Mandy Stille finished sixth with a time of 3:51.0, breaking the school record of 3:54.70 set earlier this season.

Smith also broke her own school record with a time of 56.83 to place seventh in the finals of the 400-meter run. Her old mark, set last season, was 58.16.

Stille finished in ninth place in the 60-meter hurdles (9.02) and in the long jump (with a personal best 17 feet, 10-1/4 inches) and 12th in the triple jump (36-3 1/2).

Also for the Hens, sophomore Lissy Dean was 13th in the triple jump (36-2 1/4) and 29th in the long jump (16-7), freshman Rachel Young was 16th in the shot put (40-10 1/4), and Wright was 19th in the 60 meters (7.99) and 31st in the 200 meters (26.09).
