Blue Hens win 10 titles in Delaware Invitational

12:01 a.m., Jan. 20, 2004--University of Delaware indoor track and field athletes had 10 first-place finishes to highlight the Delaware Indoor Track and Field Invitational, held Saturday afternoon at the Delaware Field House.

The UD men captured the Division I team title while the women placed second.

Norfolk State University won the women’s Division I title, the College of New Jersey won the men's Division II/III title and East Stroudsburg University won the women's Division II/III title.

A total of 11 women's teams and nine men's teams competed in two different divisions.

The Fightin’ Blue Hen men captured seven titles as Mike Yost won the weight throw (49 feet, 7 inches), Charlie Williams the triple jump (39 feet, 3 1/4 inches), John Morgan the 800 meters (1:58.97), Patrick Riley the mile run (4:27.47), Andrew Cox the 200 meters (23.33) and Roger Brown the 60 meters (6.97). Also, the 4 x 800 meter relay team won in a time of 8:19.23.

The UD women took three first-place finishes as Casey Bennett won the pole vault competition for the second straight week with a jump of 11 feet, 5 3/4 inches, Jenn Kutney captured the 3,000 meters (12:00.12), and the 4 x 800 meter relay team won in a time of 10:21.18.

UD athletes who posted more than one top-six finish included Williams, who was first in the men's triple jump and third in the 400 meters; Chris Dixon, who was fourth in the men's 200 meters and fifth in the 400 meters; Yost, who was first in the men's weight throw and fifth in the shot put; Tyechia Smith, who was fourth in the women's 200 meters and sixth in the 60 meters; Riley, who was first in the men's mile and second in the 1,000 meters; and Mandy Stille, who was fourth in the women's triple jump and fifth in the long jump.

Both UD teams will compete at the Princeton Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 24, in Princeton, N.J.
