Summer Faculty Institute set June 7-9

1:11 p.m., May 28, 2004--UD’s summer Faculty Institute begins Monday, June 7, with a pre-institute session on “Promoting Thoughtful Online Discussions through Effective Questioning” from noon—4:30 p.m. The deadline for institute registration is Friday, June 4.

Led by Carol DeArment, instructional designer for the Center for Instructional Development and Distance Education at the University of Pittsburgh, the pre-institute session includes a hands-on workshop on using discussion groups on WebCT, UD’s course management system. Information is available online at [http://present.smith.udel.edu/calendar/detail.php?classid=520].

The centerpiece of the summer Faculty Institute is the General Education Institute Tuesday and Wednesday, June 8-9. The goals of the General Education Institute are to place UD’s General Education Initiative in a national context, to highlight the initiative’s ethics, cultural diversity and assessment, and to help faculty develop instructional approaches that advance general education goals.

The institute is scheduled two full days. On Tuesday, June 8, it begins with breakfast at 8 a.m. and ends with a reception and poster session at 4 p.m. On Wednesday, June 9, presentations begin at 9 a.m. and end at 3 p.m., after lunch and breakout sessions.

Featured sessions will include:

  • Keynote address by Freeman Hrabowski III, president of the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, on “Promoting Diversity in a Public University: The UMBC Experience.” Hrabowski’s research involves minority participation in science and math education.
  • A discussion of cultural diversity by Debra Humphreys, vice president for communications and public affairs at the Association of American Colleges and Universities and a former director of programs on diversity in higher education.
  • A presentation on ethics by Alex London, assistant professor of philosophy and executive member of the Center for the Advancement of Applied Ethics at Carnegie Mellon University, and Tom Powers, National Science Foundation research fellow in the School of Engineering and Applied Science at the University of Virginia.
  • A presentation on assessment by Peggy Maki, a higher education consultant who formerly was senior scholar and director of assessment at the American Association for High Education. Maki is the author of “Assessing for Learning: Building a Sustainable Commitment Across the Institution.”

Additional Faculty Institute presentations throughout June and July will give faculty, staff and graduate students opportunities to explore how technology can enhance active learning. There will be hands-on sessions in Web CT and presentations on using digital mapping in research and video conferencing. Additional presentations will explain bulk slide scanning, CD and DVD mastering and duplication, campus training module creation and other instructional media resources.
