Timmins joins Delaware women’s basketball staff

11:50 a.m., Oct. 13, 2003--Former University of Delaware standout point guard Carrie Timmins has been named to the Fightin’ Blue Hens women’s basketball staff as an assistant coach, Head Coach Tina Martin has announced.

Timmins, 22, is a four-year letter winner who started as a senior last season and led the team to a share of the Colonial Athletic Association regular season title and a second straight trip to the Women’s National Invitation Tournament.

Timmins replaces another former UD standout point guard, Megan Dellegrotti, who took a position as a physical education teacher and assistant coach near her hometown of Berwick, Pa., after one season on the staff.

A native of New Oxford, Pa., Timmins joins a staff that includes Martin, associate head coach Jeanine Radice and assistant coach Tyrone Perry.

UD will begin pre-season practice with Midnight Mania festivities on Friday, Oct. 17, and will open the 2003-04 season against the University of Richmond on Friday, Nov. 21, at the Bob Carpenter Sports/Convocation Center.

Timmins played four seasons under Martin and was part of some of the most successful squads in UD history. While Timmins was a member of the team, the Hens compiled a four-year record of 92-29, advanced to postseason play three times and posted an unprecedented four straight 20-win seasons.

The Hens won the America East Conference title and made their first NCAA Tournament appearance in 2001 and made their first Women’s NIT appearance in 2002.

After backing up Dellegrotti at point guard for three years, Timmins took over the starting role last season and thrived. She was a co-captain and started 30 of 31 games, averaging 6.4 points per game and ranking among the conference leaders with 91 assists and 28 steals.

Timmins scored a career-high 14 points in UD’s regular season win over Old Dominion University and in the team’s CAA Tournament win over Virginia Commonwealth University.

An honor student who will earn her bachelor’s degree in health and exercise sciences from UD in December, Timmins finished her career tied for eighth on the all-time UD games played list with 111.

She was a CAA Ehlers Leadership Award nominee in 2002-03 and, in March 2002, was honored by the National Strength and Conditioning Association as an All-American for her dedication to conditioning and weight training. She twice earned the basketball team’s Top Conditioned Athlete Award.
