UD men's tennis team fares well at Towson

9:25 a.m., Oct. 8, 2003--The University of Delaware men's tennis team won all three matches in pool play before falling to Georgetown University in the championship match at the Towson Invitational last weekend.

The Blue Hens (5-2) downed Loyola College 5-0, the University of Maryland Baltimore County 3-2 and Mount St. Mary's College 5-0 on Friday to advance to the championship match.

The match was postponed due to rain on Saturday but resumed Sunday with the Hens dropping a narrow 3-2 decision to the Hoyas.

UMBC placed third in the tournament followed by Villanova, host Towson, Mount St. Mary's, Loyola and Monmouth.

Georgetown advanced to the finals after wins of 4-1 over Monmouth, 3-2 over Villanova and 5-0 over Towson.

In the championship match, Georgetown clinched the win with two victories in singles as Scott Faust downed Delaware's Adam Liebman at No. 3 and Kevin Killeavy upended Josh Ditman 6-1, 6-3 at the No. 4 spot. Georgetown also picked up the win in doubles to clinch the team victory.

Delaware received wins from Sanjay Khindri at No. 1 singles and John Tully at No. 2.

Tully and Khindri both posted 4-0 records in singles for the tournament, while Ditman was 3-1, Liebman was 2-2 and the doubles team of Ari Zweig and Michael Austin went 2-2.

The Blue Hen men’s and women’s tennis teams will return to action on Saturday, Oct. 11, at La Salle University in Philadelphia.
