UD’s Peffer wins two titles in CAA swim championships

10:10 a.m., Feb. 20, 2004--Senior Sarah Peffer captured two titles and set a school record as the University of Delaware women moved into fourth place in the team standings after the second day of the Colonial Athletic Association swimming and diving championships Thursday night at the George Mason University Aquatic and Fitness Center in Fairfax,Va.

The UD men remained in 10th place in the team standings despite two top 10 finishes.

The third day of the championships gets under way today (Friday), with preliminaries at 11 a.m. followed by the championships at 6 p.m. The fourth and final day of competition will be Saturday.

Host George Mason remains in first place among the women's teams with 243 points, followed by the University of North Carolina Wilmington (189), Davidson (168), Delaware (144), Old Dominion (131), Towson (121), Drexel (107), William & Mary (105), James Madison (101) and the College of Charleston (51).

In the men's competition, UNC Wilmington is in first place with 238 points, followed by George Mason (233.5), James Madison (178.5), Towson (157), Drexel, (137) William & Mary (107), Old Dominion (101), Davidson (99), the College of Charleston (75) and Delaware (69).

Peffer has now won six conference championships in her career. She captured her second straight 500 freestyle title Thursday night in a time of 4:54.90, which broke her own school record of 4:58.26 set last season.

Peffer then joined the 400 medley relay team of Kristen Avioli, Sara Stephens and Jill Fitzgerald for another title. The team had a winning time of 3:52.90, less than one second off the school record.

Also for the UD women, Stephens finished third in the 200 individual medley (2:08.38), Meredith Law fifth in the 500 freestyle (5:06.47) and Fitzgerald ninth in the 50 freestyle with a time of 24.20, breaking her own school record of 24.30 set in the preliminaries earlier in the day. She broke the record of 24.36 set by Nancy Davis in 1996-97.

For the men, freshman diver Steve Henn finished sixth in the one-meter diving event with a total of 234.60 points. Also in that event, fellow UD freshman Dan O'Connell was 11th with a score of 186.95.

The UD 400 medley relay team of Alex Skacel, David Hardy, Brendan Spencer and Colin Gibson finished ninth in a time of 3:36.34.
