Kids sought for bone and muscle study 1:24 p.m., April 19, 2004--Christoper Modlesky, assistant professor of nutrition and dietetics, and graduate student Matthew Cavaiola are conducting a study about muscles and bones of children with and without disabilities. The objective of the study is to learn about growth and development in the two groups. The researchers are seeking children from ages 8-12 to participate in the study, which would include three sessions, held during evenings or weekends. The first session is a complete physical examination, the second is an MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) examination of the right upper leg, both at the A. I. du Pont Hospital, and the third is non-invasive bone density tests of the leg and body carried out in the UD Human Performance Laboratory. In addition, diet and physical activity information will be gathered. Participation will give children an opportunity to learn about their body composition, bones, diet and physical activity. In addition, each child will receive up to $75 in gift certificates. A joint project of UD and the A.I. du Pont Hospital for Children, the study is funded by a grant from United Cerebral Palsy.
