New sportsmanship award presented to UD athletes

10:07 a.m., June 21, 2004--Twenty-two University of Delaware scholar-athletes have been named winners of the inaugural Blue Hen Team Sportsmanship Awards.

The newly created sportsmanship awards are sponsored by the UD athletics department and are presented to those scholar-athletes who have been exceptional role models and who have displayed outstanding sportsmanship in dealings with their teammates, coaches, opponents and officials.

“We are extremely proud to honor these individuals for their efforts in showing true sportsmanship throughout the year,” Director of Athletics Edgar N. Johnson said. “These special scholar-athletes have shown that you can be an outstanding competitor on the field and still accomplish your goals with great character and sportsmanship while showing respect to your opponents and to officials.”

The winners, who were selected by their head coaches, are Jennifer Krepps (women’s soccer), Morgan Funsten (men’s soccer), Leah Geib (field hockey), Niecy Taylor (volleyball), Erin Gemmill (women’s cross country), Christopher Ward (men’s cross country), Leon Clarke (football), Mike Ames (men’s basketball), Tracey Howell (women’s basketball), John Morgan (indoor track and field), Sarah Bochet (a double winner in indoor track and field and also outdoor track and field), Jill Fitzgerald (women’s swimming), Adam Goldstein (men’s swimming), Steve Van Note (baseball), Alison Harrington (rowing), Jerome Holder (outdoor track and field), Ashley Green (softball), B.J. Jaworski (golf), Lauren Carrigan (women’s lacrosse), Matt Alrich (men’s lacrosse), Adam Liebman (men’s tennis), and Stefanie Riddle (women’s tennis).
