Registration under way for UD’s Solve It math program

11:18 a.m., April 16, 2004--Registration has begun for the University of Delaware’s Solve It mathematics program, a correspondence summer course for students entering the fourth through eighth grades in the fall.

The program, offered through the College of Human Services, Education and Public Policy, gives students interesting and challenging problems and encourages family involvement.

Past problems, which blend mathematics with everyday situations, have required students to calculate how many gallons of water can fill their bedrooms, analyze product claims made by companies and describe a fair way of splitting business profits.

The program is spread over four mail packets, beginning with an introduction and sample problems in mid-May. Three additional monthly packets will include worksheets for eight problems and a discussion of the solutions to the previous month’s problems.

Students can choose between level A, designed for students in the fourth through sixth grades, or level B, aimed at students going to sixth through eighth grades. Participants can switch levels throughout the program.

Students who mail their completed worksheets back to the University will receive written comments with the next package, a final report, which will include a summary of the student’s progress and a certificate of recognition.

The graded program costs $100 per student and $50 for an additional student at the same address. The material for both levels, without grading, is available for $40.
