UD softball team hopes to make CAA tourney

11 a.m., May 3, 2004--After taking two of three games against host Towson University in a weekend series, the University of Delaware softball team must now sit and wait to see if it wins an invitation to the four-team Colonial Athletic Association tournament.

The Fightin’ Blue Hens completed the conference schedule with a mark of 9-8 and are unable to make up a rainout of an April 4 CAA game against Drexel. The Hens are 27-20-1 overall.

UD is battling for the playoff spot with Towson, which is 8-7 entering a three-game series at Drexel, and George Mason, which is 7-8 entering a series at the University of North Carolina Wilmington.

Towson must win two of its three games against Drexel to clinch a playoff spot while George Mason must sweep UNC Wilmington. Should either team fall short, UD will make the tournament field. Hofstra and James Madison have already clinched spots.

The Hens’ hopes were put on hold Sunday when Towson scored an unearned run in the bottom of the seventh to win 3-2 at the Towson Center Field. The narrow win came after UD had taken the first two games of the series, 6-0 and 2-1, in a doubleheader Saturday.

In the first game Saturday, UD freshman pitcher Carolynn Sloat went the distance for her 17th win of the season. She scattered three hits and struck out eight batters. Laura Streets, who is hitting .399 on the season, blasted a grand slam.

In the second game, Jenn Joseph and Sloat shared duties on the mound and Liz Winslow had two hits and two runs batted in.

In Sunday’s game, UD took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on a single by Randi Issacs that scored Kelley Pastic.

Towson scored twice in the fourth but UD tied the game in the top of the fifth when Lauren Gardner raced home on a wild pitch. Towson won on a sacrifice fly by Emily Klein that scored Keely Walsh.

Sloat took the loss but set a school record with her 25th complete game.

UD will play the University of Maryland in a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m., Thursday, May 6, at Delaware Field. The Hens will host in-state rival Delaware State University in a doubleheader at noon, Saturday, May 8.
