UD softball team ends weekend series with win

Carolynne Sloat
10:21 a.m., April 19, 2004--The University of Delaware softball team closed out a three-game Colonial Athletic Association series by defeating George Mason University 3-0 on Sunday at Delaware Field.

George Mason won both games of Saturday’s doubleheader, topping the Fightin’ Blue Hens 2-0 and 4-1.

After the series, the Hens are 19-17 overall and 4-7 in the conference.

UD will return to action with a doubleheader against the University of Pennsylvania at 3 p.m., Tuesday, April 20, at Delaware Field.

In Sunday’s victory, UD freshman pitcher Carolyn Sloat went the distance to win her 12th game of the season. In so doing, she set a new Hen freshman record for victories in a season.

Sloat, the reigning CAA Co-Rookie of the Week, scattered four hits.

UD opened the scoring in the bottom of the first. Right fielder Kelley Pastic, who had singled and stolen a base, scored when George Mason second baseman Michelle Hartman mishandled a ball off the bat of first baseman Liz Winslow.

In the fifth inning, UD shortstop Michelle Plant scored on a single by third baseman Laura Streets, and in the sixth catcher Laurie Erickson scored on a passed ball.
