Blue Hen softball team wins three in tournament

10:20 a.m., March 22, 2004--The University of Delaware softball team went 3-2 in the Mizuno Bash at the Beach tournament played over the weekend in Georgetown.

The Fightin’ Blue Hens (15-8) defeated the University of Stony Brook 2-0, Providence University 2-1 and the University of Pennsylvania 4-0.

UD fell to Delaware State University 2-0 and to Syracuse University 10-6.

The Hens will return to action with a home doubleheader against Lehigh University beginning at 2 p.m., Wednesday, March 24.

In Sunday’s Bash at the Beach games, the Hens fell to Syracuse and then defeated Penn. The opener with Syracuse was a wild one as UD took a 4-0 lead in the first inning, with Laura Streets and Randi Isaacs getting runs batted in.

Syracuse came back with two runs in the third and three in the fifth, taking advantage of a pair of UD errors, to take a 5-4 lead. The Hens regained the lead 6-5 in the fifth on Laurie Erickson's two-run double but Syracuse exploded for five runs in the sixth to take command of the game.

Against Penn, UD pitcher Jenn Joseph fired a two-hit shutout. She also helped the Hens get on the board in the third inning when she led off with a single to right and later scored on Kelley Pastic's RBI single.

The score remained 1-0 until the sixth inning when Isaacs smacked a three-run home run.

On Saturday, UD pitcher Carolynn Sloat struck out six and Isaacs hit a home run in a 2-1 victory over Providence.

Joseph took the loss against Delaware State. She allowed just four hits over six innings but one of those was a two-run triple by Samantha Snow that accounted for both Delaware State runs.

In Friday’s opener against Stony Brook, Joseph and Sloat combined for the shutout and Streets hit a home run.
