Delaware softball team sweeps UMBC twin bill
The Fightin Blue Hens defeated UMBC 8-0 in the opening game, as junior pitcher Jenn Joseph fired a two-hit shutout, and 1-0 in the second game, as freshman Carolynn Sloat followed with a three-hitter. With the victories, UD improved to 10-6. The Hens will try to extend their winning streak when they travel to LaSalle University in Philadelphia for a doubleheader beginning at noon, Saturday, March 13. On Thursday, Joseph allowed just two hits, struck out four and walked one. She also helped her cause with two hits and a run batted in. UD sent 10 batters to the plate in a six-run fourth inning that opened with five straight hits. Laura Streets led off with a double to left field, Randi Isaacs followed with a single just inside the left field line and Liz Winslow doubled, scoring Streets and moving Isaacs to third. Laurie Erickson then drove home a pair of runs with a double to right center to give the Hens a 3-0 lead. Two outs later, Kelley Pastic followed with a two-run double down the left field line to make it 5-0. Joseph tacked on another run with her RBI single. UD ended the game with two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. After Isaacs walked, Winslow ripped her second double in as many innings over the right fielder's head, moving Isaacs to third. Erickson followed with a single to score Isaacs and make it 7-0. After a pop-up, Lauren Gardner's fielder's choice scored Winslow with the final run. In the nightcap, Sloat and UMBC's Kelly Claar locked up in a pitchers duel. UD scored the only run of the game with two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning when UMBC shortstop Reilly Ward made an errant throw on a ground ball that allowed the Hens Michelle Plant, who had doubled to open the inning, to score from second. Sloat earned her sixth win of the season with 10 strikeouts and just one walk. To learn how to subscribe to UDaily, click here. |
