Delaware softball team wins three in Dixie Classic

10:51 a.m., March 1, 2004--The University of Delaware softball team lost 2-0 to Lehigh University on Sunday in the playoff round of the Dixie Softball Classic in Virginia Beach, Va.

Three errors by the Fightin’ Blue Hens led to two Lehigh runs in the decisive fifth inning.

UD won three of its five Dixie Tournament games, raising its record to 6-5.

On Friday, the Hens defeated Radford 5-1 and Norfolk State 12-1. UD’s Laura Streets had four hits in the two games with three runs batted in and three runs scored, and sophomore Lauren Gardner made her debut with three hits and three runs batted in.

Freshman Carolynn Sloat picked up the win against Radford, allowing just one run and striking out six. Junior Jenn Joseph earned the win against Norfolk State, allowing just two hits.

On Saturday, UD lost 4-1 to Liberty then defeated fellow Colonial Athletic Association member George Mason 2-0.

Streets had four hits in the two games, and Sloat struck out nine in the complete game victory over George Mason.

UD will play its home opener at 2 p.m., Wednesday, March 3, against St. Joseph’s.
