Blue Hen softball team picked to finish fifth in CAA

1:38 p.m., Feb. 18, 2004--The University of Delaware softball team, which will open the 2004 season this weekend at the Pirate Classic at East Carolina University in Greenville, N.C., has been picked to finish fifth in the Colonial Athletic Association in a poll of coaches announced Tuesday.

Two-time defending CAA champion Hofstra University earned six of the possible seven first-place votes and 36 total points in balloting by the conference’s seven head coaches.

Towson earned the other first place-vote and was second with 29 points, followed by James Madison (24), George Mason (20), Delaware (18), the University of North Carolina Wilmington (14) and Drexel (6).

UD had an overall record of 20-21-7 in 2003 and finished third in the Colonial Athletic Association with a record of 8-7. Head Coach B.J. Ferguson was recognized as CAA Coach of the Year.

The Fightin’ Blue Hens reached the CAA postseason tournament, where they were eliminated 1-0 by Towson. It was the second straight year UD had earned a berth in the tournament.

The Hens return a solid nucleus led by senior co-captain and third baseman Laura Streets, who hit .342 with eight home runs and 28 runs batted in last season. Also back is co-captain and catcher Laurie Erickson, who hit .298 and knocked in eight runs.

UD features two outstanding pitchers in junior Jenn Joseph, who went 12-9 with a 1.65 earned run average last season, and sophomore Lindsay Jones, who was 8-6 with a 1.98 earned run average.

The Hens will participate in the Pirate Classic tournament at East Carolina University in Greenville, N.C., from Friday, Feb. 20, through Sunday, Feb. 22.

UD will take on host East Carolina, George Mason, Towson and Fairfield.

The following weekend, Feb. 27-29, the Hens will participate in a tournament at Virginia Beach. They will take on Radford, Norfolk State, Liberty and George Mason.
