SIS update in the works

10:22 a.m., Sept. 25, 2003--A project is now under way to replace the current, aging student information system (SIS). The system now in use will be 16 years old by the time implementation of the new SIS is completed in 2006.

“The move to a new student information system is the last step in a process that began in 1999 to upgrade the University’s administrative systems to new, integrated database and systems architectures, and to take advantage of web-enabled features wherever possible,” Susan Foster, vice president for information technologies, said.

“A new human resources system was implemented in 2002 and phase one of implementation of a new financial system was completed in June 2003. The remaining implementation phases of the financial system are scheduled to be complete by June 2004, just in time to begin the new student system implementation,” Foster said.

“The student system replacement project, dubbed UDSIS, began with a kickoff meeting on Aug. 4,” Joe DiMartile, assistant provost for student services and University registrar, who is leading the project, said.

DiMartile said the project membership is composed of four teams:

  • Academic services, chaired by Chris Clark, director of the School of Education;
  • Administrative services, chaired by Linda Carey, director, student housing assignment services;
  • Enrollments services, co-chaired by Jeff Palmer, associate registrar, and Jeff Rivell, senior associate director of admissions; and
  • A steering committee composed of the team chairs, DiMartile, Carl Jacobson, director of IT-Management Information Services, and Lynda Ruggerio, process design administrator for Information Technologies.

The teams are working to establish criteria for the new system and preparing a request for proposals that will be issued to vendors in November. The teams also will seek input from their constituents to define requirements in their respective areas.

Members of the University community can read the charge to the teams and follow the progress of the UDSIS project at [www.udel.edu/UDSISproject].
