School-to-Work seeks volunteers

9:35 a.m., July 17, 2003--UD’s Office of School-to-Work is looking for volunteers from the campus community to assist with one of three programs designed to help students explore career paths and understand the role education plays in achieving a career.

The programs, entitled “What’s My Line,” “What in the World” and “Choices,” require different levels of time commitment.

“What’s My Line” volunteers are asked to commit two hours during normal school hours interacting with three individual groups of students for 30 minutes each.

The volunteer acts as a “mystery guest.” Students have 10 minutes to guess the person's occupation by asking questions that can be answered yes or no. If students don’t guess the volunteer’s occupation in two minutes, it’s revealed. Then, students interview the volunteer for 17 minutes asking career questions such as "What subjects in school were most important in preparing for your career?"

Volunteers are asked to bring examples of their work—tools, products, raw materials or other visuals—to reinforce their answers during this interview session.

To volunteer in New Castle County, call 831-3102 or e-mail [lucciott@udel.edu]. For Kent/Sussex County, call 739-4561 or e-mail [pluke@bie.k12.de.us].

“What in the World” is aimed at encouraging students to study math and science by giving them firsthand knowledge of jobs that require an in-depth understanding of science, math or technology, such as health care, chemistry, engineering, conservation, technicians, electronics, environment, animal science, biology, computers, agriculture and statistics.

Time commitment is one three-hour session.

Volunteers show students one or more “mystery objects” related to the work they do. The objects may be tools, equipment, raw materials, unfinished products or other items that are unknown to the students. The mystery object may be part of a brief demonstration or discussion.

Volunteers and their mystery objects are stationed at tables with 10-12 students seated around each table. Students first try to guess the purpose and function of the mystery object(s). If the volunteer is giving a demonstration, students question what is happening and why. After a few minutes of students guessing and being given hints, the presenters reveal the answer and explain how the object or demonstration is connected to their careers. Presenters talk about the education and training required for their jobs, making it clear that if they want similar jobs, they’ll have to work hard in math and science. By this time, 10-12 minutes have elapsed, the students rotate to a new table and a new group joins each presenter. During the program, each student will see three or four different presenters.

To volunteer, call 831-3102 or e-mail [lucciott@udel.edu].

“Choices,” a seminar for eighth-grade students taught by community professionals, demonstrates how the life choices students make while in school become the foundation for their futures. Volunteers emphasize how these choices directly affect employment and their standard of living. This is done through activities that stress money and time management, school decisions, career consequences and daily decision-making.

Time commitment is four hours, two hours of training plus two hours to present the program.
