UD women’s rowing team opens season on Schuylkill

10:51 a.m., March 15, 2004--The University of Delaware women's rowing team opened its 2004 season against both LaSalle and Lehigh universities on Saturday morning on the Schuylkill River.

The meet was also the debut of first-year Fightin’ Blue Hens Head Coach Laura Slice. In it, UD earned one first-place finish, three second-place finishes and one third-place finish.

The UD second varsity eights finished first in a time of 7:19. Team members were coxswain Kat Campagnini, Lane Kohl, Maureen Gillen, Emily McElwain, Leanna Ferrand, Jess Kostick, Laura Muto, Cathy Savarese and Lyra Sawzin.

Lehigh won the second novice eights race in a time of 7:47, which topped UD’s time of 7:48. The UD team members were coxswain Kenna Plangemann, Katie Broullire, Nicky Bradley, Stacey Walczak, Jenn Boutin, Laura Belfi, Lindsey Wood, Brie Sheppard and Nicky Jackowsky.

In the novice eights race, the Hens finished second in a time of 8:21. UD team members were coxswain Alison Harrington, Betsy Seeger, Lisa Karowski, Laura Beaufort, Maria Bellumori, Elizabeth Martin, Rachel Thomas, Christina Stanley and Lynn Hamski.

Host LaSalle took the varsity eights race in 7:00, which beat UD’s time of 7:18. Members of the UD team were coxswain Carolyn Serey, Andrea Placke, Elizabeth McGarry, Janice Brown, Dawn Hussnatter, Elizabeth Harris, Elizabeth McInturff, Laura McDonald and Melanie Turner.

In the varsity fours, La Salle won in a time of 8:22 while UD took second in 8:34. UD team members were coxswain Jill Goldman, Jamie Schoenewald, Dawnyel Boucek, Stephanie Miller and Susan Carbine.

The UD rowing team will return to action on Saturday, March 27, when it travels to Miami, to take on Barry University in a dual meet.
