Newark Police investigate May 8 robbery of student

4:35 p.m., May 9, 2004--Newark Police are investigating the assault and robbery of a 20-year-old UD student that occurred around 2:30 a.m., Saturday, May 8, on East Delaware Avenue, between Academy and Haines streets.

The student was approached by two men in their early 20s wearing dark clothing who ordered him to give them his money. They struck him on the head with a glass bottle, took an undisclosed amount of cash and then fled in an unknown direction. The student was treated at the Newark Emergency Center and released after receiving stitches in his head. He told investigating officers that he did not recall much of what happened.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Det. Andrew Rubin at (302) 366-7110, ext. 135, or Delaware Crimestoppers at 1-800-TIP-3333, where information may be left anonymously.

Students are cautioned about walking alone during late-night hours and should always be aware of their surroundings. An escort service is provided by the Department of Public Safety for students walking on the campus after dark and can be requested by dialing 831-2222 or picking up one of the many “blue light” phones throughout campus. Additional safety tips can be found at [www.udel.edu/PublicSafety/safetytips.htm].
