UD receives $200,000 to promote renewable energy

9:02 a.m., Nov. 26, 2003--The University of Delaware’s Center for Energy and Environmental Policy has received a $200,000 gift from Conectiv to support a new program promoting renewable energy use in Delaware.

The program will focus on three specific areas to increase the use of renewable energy technologies in Delaware, including:

  • Identifying high-value, high-visibility renewable energy applications;
  • Determining approaches to encourage renewable energy suppliers to enter Delaware markets; and
  • Developing creative and effective education and consumer outreach regarding renewable energy technologies.

    “Our center is grateful to have been recommended by the Delaware Division of the Public Advocate and the Delaware Public Service Commission for this gift, and we thank Conectiv for providing such support for Delaware’s future,” John M. Byrne, director of the Center for Energy and Environmental Policy (CEEP), said. “The willingness of these governmental and business leaders to encourage investment in energy sustainability is surely a hopeful sign for our state. We intend to match this goodwill with comparable commitments of our own at the University.”

    The Delaware Public Service Commission, which regulates utilities in the state, and the Delaware Public Advocate, which represents the public in the proceedings of the commission, selected UD to receive the award after reviewing CEEP’s proposal.

    “We’re pleased to make this contribution to the University of Delaware,” Joseph M. Rigby, Conectiv Power Delivery president, said. “This gift reflects our ongoing commitment to ensuring a long-term supply of reliable and affordable energy for all of our customers. Encouraging renewable energy use also demonstrates our dedication to preserving and protecting the environment, which is a core value at our company.”

    CEEP was created in 1984 to explore the relationships among technology, the environment and society and to evaluate how choices in one area affect the others. CEEP supports both master's and doctoral degrees in environmental and energy policy and in urban affairs and public policy.
