IT advises installing newest RealPlayer 12:28 a.m., Feb. 9, 2004--RealPlayer, used to play courseware and other streaming video over the UD network, has a critical security vulnerability that could allow hackers to spread a worm or take control of users computers. Users on campus should deal with the vulnerability immediately by downloading the latest version of RealPlayer at [http://www.udel.edu/UMS/itv/realplayer/]. Windows users should uninstall their current RealPlayers and reinstall a safe, free version through the UD site. Although there are ads for paid versions, Janet de Vry, manager, IT-User Services, said that the paid versions are not necessary. De Vry said the situation is similar to last summers discovery of a vulnerability in the Windows operating system. Two weeks after the vulnerability was discovered, a worm was found. There is currently no virus or worm or problem, but there is a vulnerability, she said. Downloading the correct version is a sensible precaution. Continuing to run the old version puts your computer and others on the network at risk. To learn how to subscribe to UDaily, click here. |
