Make a splash this summer in UD’s Outdoor Pool

11:21 a.m., May 28, 2004--Like to swim and catch some rays, but don’t like high gas prices and traffic jams to and from the beach? There is an alternative—and it’s right in the neighborhood for UD faculty and staff—membership in the UD Outdoor Pool.

The pool opens Sunday, May 30.

Besides its convenient location behind the Gold Ice Arena, one of the largest outdoor pools in the state has been enhanced with renovated lockers rooms and 250 lounge and sand chairs on a pool deck accentuated with landscaping features and a pair of sliding tubes for kids young and old.

Blue Hen fans of all ages also will enjoy occasional poolside visits by UD mascot favorites Baby Blue and YoUDee.

Other amenities include a shower, changing facilities, snack bar and a shade-providing Funbrella in the fenced-in baby pool area. Four new Funbrellas and a dining area also have been installed on the main deck. The pool also is equipped with a heater so that swimming early in the season is not a concern.

Lessons and swim team memberships also are available at nominal fees.

Pool hours are:

  • May 31-June 4, Monday-Friday, noon-6 p.m.;
  • June 7-Aug. 6, Monday-Friday, noon-8 p.m.;
  • Aug. 9-30, Monday-Friday, noon-7:30 p.m.;
  • Aug. 31-Sept. 1, Monday-Friday, to be announced; and
  • May 30-Aug. 29, Saturdays, Sundays and holidays, noon-7 p.m.

Special events for members include:

  • Faculty/Staff Weekend, June 5-6—UD faculty and staff with a valid ID get two free admissions, and also can bring guests for only $3 per person;
  • Free guest for a day, June 26 and Aug. 7 (rain dates June 27 and Aug. 8)—Members can bring a guest to the pool at no charge, and passes will be mailed to members;
  • Member picnic, 6-8:30 p.m., Friday, July 23, rain or shine (additional fee to attend picnic);
  • Pool Appreciation Day, Sat., Aug. 14 (rain date Aug. 15); and
  • Open early week (for lap swimmers only)—weeks of Aug. 16 and 23, pool opens at 11 a.m.

It’s a good idea to sign up early, because memberships for the past two summers have sold out halfway through the season.

Registrations are being accepted from 8 a.m.-6 p.m., Monday through Friday, at the Fred Rust Ice Arena.
Online registration for first-time members is accessible at [www.udel.edu/outdoorpool/registration.html].

UD employees can pay their pool membership fees through payroll deduction. Current and new members should contact Jim Kaden at 831-6038 for the needed paperwork, or visit the Fred Rust Ice Arena Informational Window.

For more information, visit [http://www.udel.edu/PR/outdoorpool/] or call the UD Outdoor Pool office at 831-2868 (or 831-8293 during normal pool operating hours).
