Poet addresses human rights in April 13 lecture

3:41 p.m., April 9, 2004--Nela Rio, an Argentine-Canadian poet, will give a multimedia presentation and lecture on human rights at 7 p.m., Tuesday, April 13, in Room 217 Gore Hall.

For nearly a decade, Rio has organized international poetry and art exhibitions on the role technology plays in cultural and linguistic issues. Her books, which have been translated into English and French, explore censorship, ideological repression and violence against women.

Rio taught Spanish-American literature for more than 30 years at St. Thomas University in Canada. She has served on the Ministerial Advisory Committee on Multiculturalism in Canada for 13 years, after being appointed to the position in 1990-91 by Canada’s minister of labor.

The free lecture, which is open to the public, was organized by Gladys Ilarregui, UD assistant professor of foreign languages and literatures. The event is cosponsored by the Latin American Studies Program and the Women’s Studies Program. For more information, call Ilarregui at 831-2451.
