Lectures, support group address sexual assault issues

10:16 a.m., Feb. 27, 2004--Two upcoming lectures, along with a newly forming support group, will address date rape and sexual assault issues, as part of a campaign entitled “Spring Break: Play Hard, Play Safe, Play Smart.” Part of UD’s ongoing student safety campaign, the lectures are designed to offer self-protection tips to students and promote safe behavior during spring break.

The first lecture, set for 7-9 p.m., Monday, March 8, in the Trabant University Theatre, will feature speaker Debra Puglisi Sharp. A local sexual assault survivor and author of the recently published book, “Shattered,” Sharp will talk about recovery from sexual violence and will sign copies of her book. A reception with refreshments will follow.

The second lecture, set for 7-9 p.m., Tuesday, March 9, in 131 Sharp Lab, will feature Richard Woodcock, a former official with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration. Woodcock will speak about drug-facilitated rape and offer tips for its prevention.

To promote the lectures and tie the awareness campaign into spring break, “Spring Break: Play Hard, Play Safe, Play Smart” informational kiosks will be set up throughout the Trabant University Center from 11 a.m.-2 p.m., Monday-Thursday, March 8-11.

A support group for survivors of sexual assault is currently forming and will meet from 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesdays at a location yet to be determined. This group will begin in mid-March, and those who plan to attend should call Angela at 831-3465.

The lectures are sponsored by UD’s Sexual Offense Support Services (SOS), Wellspring Health Education and the Sexual Assault Network of Delaware. The support group is sponsored by SOS and Wellspring Health Education.

Both lectures are free and open to the public. For more information, call Angela Seguin at 831-3465.
