Scene painting students display works Dec. 10

11:02 a.m., Dec. 8, 2003--Ten students in “Fundamentals of Scene Painting” will display works they created for the course from 10 a.m.-5 p.m., Wednesday, Dec. 10, in Hartshorn Theatre. The informal exhibit is open to the campus community.

Taught by Fritz Szabo, assistant professor of theatre, the course includes lectures on tools, materials and techniques of scene painting; practice on basic painting techniques such as wet-blending, scumbling, stippling, glazing and spattering; and use of techniques and processes to paint wood grain, marble and brick.

For the course, the students, who had no previous experience in painting for the theatre, completed three major projects. They selected the pieces themselves and executed them in a variety of sizes. The students had three different surfaces to paint on: luan, Masonite and Masonite covered in duck (or muslin).

“All three surfaces have properties that present their own challenges,” Szabo said, “so the class was forced to discover and wrestle with these differences.

“I’m really proud of their work,” Szabo said. “They’ve worked very hard (averaging 25 hours a week), have demonstrated remarkable growth as painters and have been great fun to be with.”
