Seymour named Student Nurse of the Year

Senior nursing student Alyssa Seymour
4:22 p.m., March 4, 2004--Alyssa Seymour, a senior nursing student at UD, was named Delaware Student Nurse of the Year by the Delaware Student Nursing Association (DSNA) at its annual banquet and awards ceremony in Dover recently. She received a $750 award and a plaque.

“I am honored that the faculty chose to nominate me. It is support and recognition of four years of hard work,” Seymour said.

DSNA is an organization for pre-nursing and nursing students enrolled in Delaware-accredited diploma, associate and baccalaureate degree programs. DSNA promotes the development of professional leadership in nursing students while providing a collaborative relationship with other health care team members and the community.

Seymour, of Hockessin, is president of UD’s Student Nurse Organization (SNO). During her presidency, SNO became more proactive according to Lisa Plowfield, professor of nursing and department chairperson.

“Under her leadership this chapter has experienced increased growth, political activism, higher visibility with volunteerism and expanded the membership attendance at the fall and spring national conferences,” Plowfield said.

In 2001 and 2003, Seymour was selected a “Woman of Promise” by the Department of Nursing and by the University. She is a recipient of an AstraZeneca Academic Scholarship.

Seymour attended A.I. du Pont High School in Wilmington before enrolling at UD. Her mother is a nurse and midwife who studied in England and practiced in Canada where Seymour was born.

Seymour said she plans to specialize in pediatric care and join the staff of Children’s Hospital of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia after she graduates. “I love kids. I like taking care of them and making them feel better.”
