UDs Cross, Breault win NSCA All-American honors
Cross, a junior, played defensive line for the 2003 NCAA Division I-AA national championship football team, and Breault, a senior, played midfield and was a two-time All-Region selection for the field hockey team. They were nominated for the national honor by Russell Barbarino, UD head strength and conditioning coach. The NSCA recognizes scholar-athletes for their work in the weight room and for athletic accomplishments, academic achievements and community involvement. More than 150 athletes from more than 75 colleges and universities are recognized annually. Cross, a three-year letter winner, appeared in 15 games and had 27 tackles, including 12 solo stops. He recorded 2.5 tackles for loss, had one sack and tied for the team lead with three fumble recoveries. An outstanding student with a 3.9 grade point average in civil engineering, Cross was named a Verizon College Sports Information Directors of America second team Academic All-American last fall. He was named to the Atlantic 10 Football Conference All-Academic team three times and to the District 2 All-Academic team two times. In two of the last three seasons, Cross was named the football teams best conditioned athlete based on a series of pre-season strength, speed and agility tests. His personal bests include 385 pounds in the bench press, 565 pounds in the squat and 345 pounds in the power clean. He had a vertical jump of 41.5 inches and ran the 40-yard dash in 4.4 seconds.
Breault, a four-year letter winner, led the 2003 field hockey team to a 14-7 record and a national ranking in the top 20. During her four seasons at UD, the team went 45-37 and advanced to the conference postseason tournament every year. UD advanced to the Colonial Athletic Association championship game in both 2001 and 2003. Breault was named to the All-CAA second team in 2003 and was named to the STX National Field Hockey Coaches Association All-Mid-Atlantic Region second team each of the past two seasons. She started all 21 games in 2003 and was third on the team in scoring with 16 points on eight goals and eight assists. She played in the North-South Senior All-Star Game A business management major with a minor in marketing, Breault has registered personal bests of 130 pounds in the bench press, 235 pounds in the squat and 115 pounds in the power clean. She ran the 40-yard dash in 4.95 seconds. "Jessica works very hard and her lack of size is made up with her leadership and heart," Barbarino said. "She has increased her squat and bench press maxes in four years by an astonishing 150 percent combined.
